Digital Citizenship 2023-2024

Professional Development

Digital citizenship is important for K-12 students and teachers because it equips them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to navigate the digital world responsibly, ethically, and safely. As part of becoming a recognized digital citizenship school and district by Common Sense Education, every teacher must complete one hour of digital citizenship training. We have listed below links to two digital citizenship lessons. Either lesson will satisfy the one-hour requirement needed to become recognized by Common Sense Education. You are welcome to take both courses since the information provided is relevant.  Your campus librarian will provide you with further information about Digital Citizenship.

Artificial Intelligence, Is it Plagiarism?

The number of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has grown significantly over the past few years. Some of the most popular tools such as ChatGPT are capable of creating seemingly original content, like images or text. In this lesson which is appropriate for all teachers and students in grades 8-12, we will consider the ethical dilemmas of using AI to create content and identify the appropriate use of these tools in a school setting.

We are Civil Communicators

“When we talk about our personal beliefs and politics, passions can run high — especially when we’re online. These intense moments can often lead to tit-for-tat insults, or worse. But, if addressed calmly and coolly, they can be an opportunity to find common ground and deeper understanding.”

Lessons for Students

Every year, EPISD receives Digital Citizenship Recognition from Common Sense Education. To maintain this recognition, all students must complete a minimum of three Digital Citizenship lessons provided by Common Sense Media. This year, we have organized these lessons to take place during Advisory sessions. The lessons are conveniently linked in the attached PDF.

While the lessons are categorized by grade level, you have the flexibility to choose any three that best suit your students’ needs. Several of the lessons extend beyond the 30-minute advisory period; therefore, lessons featuring condensed versions are marked with a star.

To access the lessons, you must sign in. Please log in using your EPISD credentials by selecting ‘Continue with Google’ when prompted.
